The Monday morning workout class in the Club have become a mobility workout over the last month. I started off by introducing bits of mobility into the workout class, and everyone loved it so much we decided to make the whole workout mobility focused.

What is mobility?
'the ability to move or be moved freely and easily.'

Mobility vs. Flexibility
Mobility is an active movement, whereas flexibility is passive. For example: when you use your arms to pull your knee towards your chest that is flexibility. Moving your knee towards to the same degree your chest without your arms would be your mobility.

Here's why that's important:

Injuries tend to happen in the gab between our passive range of motion (flexibility) and our active range of motion (mobility). For example: normal range of motion for thoracic spine* rotation is around 30 degrees. Let's say for some reason you have 15 degrees of rotation available because of repetitive motions you need to do at your job causing strain. You're putting away groceries but missed the shelf when putting a can of beans away and have to twist in hurry to try and catch it. That movement has to come from somewhere, maybe you twist outside your range of motion and pull a muscle, or maybe that movement is borrowed from your shoulder mobility and your shoulder ends up pulled.
*different parts of the spine will have different ROM*

When we hear preventing injury we may think of breaks or bigger events, but I mean some of these smaller moments. I mean preventing pulled muscles, back aches because you slept weird, sore shoulders because you played tag with your kid. The moments we are a part of every day, that all of us can relate to, become more easeful. Working on mobility allows you to move more freely in your daily activities without pain or strain.

* Range of motion is the totality of movement that a joint is capable of doing. *

Mobility work is the key to help all your joints feel better, and ache less. It's the key to your muscles functioning optimally. It's an amazing thing to add to any current movement routines, or practices. It's way more beneficial than stretching, long term.

Join us on Mondays at 9:30am EST for a whole class dedicated to mobility workouts. This class is 20-25 minutes, with a little bit of social time (sharing wins, saying hi) and it is the best way to start off your week.

This class is open to Rebel Movement Club members only, so join the club today.
