What is diet-culture?
Diet-culture is a complex topic that we could probably fill several emails with, but the overview definition is: essentially this; diet-culture is a system of beliefs that favour body size, and appearance over physical, psychological and overall well-being. It favours thin bodies, and demonizes fat bodies. It promotes the idea that thin bodies have more value than any other.
Now today we aren't doing the complete break down but I do have to mention that diet-culture and anti-fat bias have racist roots. For more info check out the resources below.

“...the current anti-fat bias in the United States and in much of the West was not born in the medical field. Racial scientific literature since at least the eighteenth century has claimed that fatness was ‘savage’ and ‘black.”

How does diet-culture effect me?
Long story short: it effects you a lot. Diet-culture has impacted the way you see yourself, your body, and others bodies. This work is a long-term, and requires some internal work as well as extra learning and support. (like one-on-one coaching support ;) ) Diet-culture is like a pair of classes you've been seeing the world through. You never put them on, but they're there but it's your decision to take them off.

But how does diet-culture effect my yoga practice, or workout?
Most obviously: diet-culture is the voice that says that the purpose of exercise is weight-loss & punishment. (it's not)
Have you ever thought any of these things?
-Why can't I stick to my workouts? I always start, but can't seem to keep it up!
-I'm just not good at exercise.
-I'm not in good enough shape to exercise.
-I'm not good enough at working out/yoga to do it regularly
-I'm just lazy.

Chances are the real reason behind your hesitations is diet-culture shit. You haven't had the experience of moving your body in a trauma safe, body positive space. Once you find this space, and really give it a shot (show up for class, put yourself out there, try new things even if they're scary) you'll learn that:

-you totally can have a consistent movement practice that benefits you
-you are good at some exercise, learning some, and maybe have some faves. (like everyone else)
-you are good enough.
-'in good enough shape to exercise' is a whole can of worms but basically: bullshit.
-you're not lazy, you've experienced shitty treatment from diet-culturey places and it's scary. (or maybe you truly relate to being lazy in which case, whatevs that's not a bad thing becaus rest is good. lazyness is like one big myth.)
-maybe actually really fucking love moving your body because it makes you feel alive, and powerful, and less likely to want to kick the slow walker in the back of the ankle.

TL:DR:
-diet-culture is a system of beliefs that says small bodies are better for stupid reasons, and it has racist roots
-diet-culture effects how you see yourself, your body & others
-there's nothing wrong with you, lazyness is like a big myth
-the real reason you can't seem to keep a consistent movement practice is because diet-culture, capitalism and a variety of factors gets in your way. What will help is a trauma-safe, diet-culture free space.

So where do I find an online space to exercise & do yoga?
