What is Diet-Culture?
Billie Smith | JAN 21, 2023
We talk a lot about diet-culture and similar terms so I thought I'd take a moment to talk about what it actually is.
Diet-culture is a system of beliefs that favour body size, and appearance over physical, psychological and overall well-being. It favours thin bodies, and demonizes fat bodies. It promotes the idea that thin bodies have more value than any other.
Diet-culture is sneaky and has taught us that certain sizes are ‘better’ or ‘healthier’. That we can look at someone’s body and tell their health, and even their worth. There are messages everywhere-implicit and explicit-saying that our bodies have to be one size, one look to be worthy and lovable. Valid and healthy. When we are unlearning this, it's important to learn from the inside out. It takes time to unlearn that system of beliefs like that health and size are connected.
What's Anti-Diet? Anti-Diet refers to being opposed to diet-culture.
What is Body positivity is a social movement that promotes acceptance of all bodies, regardless of size, shape, skin tone, gender, or physical abilities.
Fat Positive is similar to the above, which is zeroing in on the acceptance of bodies at all sizes, and tends to be used when more actively fighting against fat-bias.
