Starting this business six years ago felt like a big leap of faith. It was scary, and I felt inadequate and unprepared. I didn't have some grand plan, starting a business, I thought, was years down the line; I felt a little like I was forced to jump before I was ready. I don't need to remind you that we were in difficult covid times, both my jobs had closed, and I suddenly had no reliable income, no career, and no fucking idea what to do. Then one of my regulars in one of the last classes at one of those jobs said 'are you going to keep teaching?', and at the moment I decided to it was time to chase my dreams, and jumped.
I am so proud of the 29-year-old version of myself that made that choice. (I see you doing that math, I'm 35 now) I've seen far too many new-entrepreneurs hold back because they didn't feel ready. Spoiler alert, most of us won't feel ready, no matter how many hundreds of hours of experience we've had. Looking back, I was definitely ready, I knew enough, I was capable, and I think I did a fantastic job.
I guess when I say I was unprepared, the reality was that I was able to get my shit together very quickly, and started Move with Billie in about a month. I was following a dream of mine that I have been holding on to it ever since. It's what keeps me showing up during slow months, weird times, and good times. I'm proud that I've had the strength and confidence to figure it out, and to stick to it when things got tough.
Before I tell you that dream, you wanna know the other thing I'm really, really grateful for?
You.
You who reads these emails, you who emails back, and you who likes/comments/replies. You who leaves me reviews and tells me how much of a difference this work has made in your life. Especially you who chose and continue to choose to share time and energy with me on your mat (or off) each week.
You, my pals, are the true heart and soul of this business, and you have helped me bring my dreams to reality. The gratitude I am filled with leaks out my eyes and makes me feel like I'm glowing. (lol this feels like a weird phrasing, but I'm kinda here for it?)
That dream? Well it's complicated.
If that dream were a flower, the flower itself would be to make a positive impact in one person's life. The stem and roots would be all the ways I do that: run a business that is values based, that puts the people over profit, that truly follows up claims with action. To create a movement space for people who have left diet culture, and want to move their bodies in a space that doesn't tell them to shrink. A space for people who don't want to leave their house to become a part of a community of others who are ditching & recovering from diet culture too.
That dream of making an impact in one persons life has come true probably hundreds of times now, based off the messages I get. I just keep planting more.
Another side of this dream is to create a space that is truly welcoming for those who have lived through trauma, who identify as queer, or who have struggled with eating disorders.
I guess it's cliché, but if you were to boil it down, my dream isn't just to create a movement studio, it's to create a community. To create a space for connection both to your body (when you're ready), and to others.
I dreamed of no longer needing to work 3 jobs; of having flexibility to rest and spend time and care doing my own recovery. I dreamed of creating a business that's just big enough that I could still get to know everyone who joined class, and be sustainable.
Happy six years everyone. Thanks for being a part of this dream of mine.
Wanna help me celebrate?
Today only (until midnight EST) use the code 'HAPPY6YEARS' at checkout to get 10% off 10 class packs, 5 class packs, or your first month of the Rebel Movement Club.
If you have any trouble, let me know. And yes, to my pals who prefer to pay via e-transfer you can send it in but it's your job to do the math. Just make sure you write what it is you're buying in the note section so I can add it to your account.
The other three things you can do to help me celebrate are:
1. Tell your friends about the studio, let them know about the sale today!
2. Leave me a review on facebook and google
3. Buy me a coffee! (or sign up to buy me a monthly coffee! ☕)
